Joseph Stalin (1878–1953) was a Georgian revolutionary, Marxist-Leninist theorist and leader of the Soviet Union. A Bolshevik from the movement’s early years, he helped build the world’s first socialist state and led the USSR through rapid industrialisation, the defeat of Nazi Germany and its emergence as a major world power.
